Surfing in Scotland
Scotland offers some of Europe's most remote, pristine, and powerful surf. The country's vast coastline is exposed to both Atlantic and North Sea swells, producing world-class waves in dramatic, uncrowded settings. Surfing in Scotland is a genuine adventure — cold water, wild landscapes, and the chance to score perfect waves with nobody around.
The breaks
Thurso East on the north coast is internationally renowned as one of the world's best right-hand reef breaks, holding waves up to triple-overhead. It hosted the World Surf League Championship Tour and attracts elite surfers when large NW swells arrive. Dunbar/Belhaven Bay on the east coast offers more accessible beach break waves on NE–E swells, close to Edinburgh.
Best conditions
Thurso works on large NW–N swells with S–SE winds. The best season is September to March. Dunbar picks up North Sea swells and works best in autumn and winter with westerly offshore winds.
Cold water & logistics
Water temperatures range from 6°C in winter to 13°C in late summer. A 6/5mm or 5/4mm wetsuit with full accessories is essential most of the year. Thurso is a 6-hour drive from Edinburgh but has accommodation and a small surf scene. Dunbar is just 30 minutes east of Edinburgh.
