Surfing in Devon

Devon's coastline runs from the iconic Atlantic-facing beaches of the north to the more sheltered south-facing bays along the English Channel. The north coast is the heart of Devon surfing — Croyde Bay, Woolacombe, and Saunton Sands form a world-famous trio that attracts surfers from across the country. The south coast adds quieter, less crowded options like Bantham when big SW swells wrap around Start Point.

North coast breaks

Croyde Bay is a powerful beach break known for hollow waves, especially at low tide. Woolacombe offers a 3-mile stretch of sand with waves for all abilities, while Saunton Sands produces long, mellow walls perfect for longboarding. The west-facing coast catches Atlantic swells consistently, making it a year-round destination.

South coast breaks

Bantham, at the mouth of the Avon estuary, is South Devon's standout spot — an excellent beach break with hollow sections over river-mouth sand bars. It needs a decent SW swell to wrap around the coast, which happens most reliably in autumn and winter. Far fewer surfers than the north coast when it's on.

Best conditions

Autumn and winter deliver the most consistent swells, with offshore SE winds creating clean conditions on the north coast and N–NE offshores on the south. The tidal range is significant — most spots work best around mid-tide. Water temperatures range from 8°C in late winter to 17°C in late summer.

Surf culture

Croyde village is the heart of Devon surf culture, with surf shops, hire centres, and beach cafes. The annual Goldcoast Oceanfest draws big crowds each June. Woolacombe is more family-friendly with excellent beachfront facilities.
