Bournemouth Pier Surf Spot Guide

Everything you need to know before paddling out at Bournemouth Pier, England.

Break typeBeach break
SeabedSand with groynes
Best swell directionS - SSW
Optimal wave size3-5ft
Best tideAll
Ability levelAll levels. Generally forgiving and lifeguarded. When firing at 4-5ft it suits intermediate surfers, but that is a rare occurrence.

Hazards & Safety

Wooden and concrete groynes at regular intervals — collision risk. Stay clear of the pier. Rip currents alongside groynes. The shore break dumps hard on shallow sand at low tide.

Local Tips

Only works on a solid southerly or SSW swell — needs significant energy to push through the English Channel. Best around the pier where sandbars build up. East of the pier is slightly better than west. If Channel buoys show 2m+ from the south, get down there.

Getting There

Right in the town centre. Walk down from the gardens, or use cliff lifts. Multiple access points via ramps and steps along the promenade.

Parking: Multiple large pay-and-display car parks on the clifftop and seafront. Prices are high in summer. Park-and-ride runs in peak season.

Facilities: Full town-centre facilities. Toilets, showers, changing rooms. Cafes and restaurants everywhere. Surf hire available near the pier. RNLI lifeguard cover in season.

Crowds

Low for surfers. The beach is rammed with swimmers in summer which can make access awkward. Designated surf zone near the pier helps.
